If you are looking for original things to do with kids and do not want to spend the day in a crowded commercial play centre, we have an idea for you. Why not turn your living room or children’s room into a safe arena full of movement?

If you have a BLOCKids climbing wall at home, you already have a real advantage. A well-planned climbing challenge can keep a group of children entertained for up to two hours, give them plenty of healthy exercise and create an experience they will remember.

So how can you organise a kids’ birthday party at home that is fun and safe at the same time?

Safe Fun – Even with a Group of Children

Safety is essential when climbing – especially when your home is full of excited birthday guests. Our home climbing walls are designed and tested with strict safety requirements in mind, but children’s creativity knows no limits.

Before you let the children enter the “arena”, introduce three basic rules:

Clear landing zone: An impact mat belongs beneath the wall. Keep the entire area around it clear – no toys, table corners or hard objects within the possible fall zone.

One climber at a time: Only one child should climb at a time (maximum two children for a paired challenge). Everyone else cheers from a safe distance, for example while sitting on a carpet or cushions. This prevents collisions and children accidentally falling onto one another.

Adult supervision: One parent should supervise throughout as the referee and “spotter”. They do not hold the child or help them climb, but remain attentive and make sure the landing area stays safe.

3 Simple Challenges

To keep the competition exciting, forget repetitive climbing up and down. Try games that use children’s imagination and test different skills.

1. Laser Maze

Create the illusion of a secret spy mission. Use coloured cotton string or thicker thread to make a “laser maze” in front of the climbing wall – for example between table legs, a door handle and a chair. The children first have to carefully make their way through the maze at floor level without touching the strings, then immediately continue by traversing the climbing wall from left to right.

Tip: Hang small bells on the strings. Every ring adds a penalty second to the total time.

2. Blind Route

This challenge is great for building team spirit. One child is blindfolded (or simply keeps their eyes closed) and starts on the wall. Another child – or the birthday child – guides them using only their voice: “Right hand onto the big rounded hold just to your left at shoulder height, left foot a little higher…” The aim is to reach the top hold (TOP).

3. Route Setter

Give the birthday child coloured tape – ideally paper tape that is easy to remove afterwards – and let them mark five holds that create their own “birthday route”. The other children then try to climb it. Whoever completes the route with the fewest touches of other holds wins.

And What About a Reward?

Children love rituals and recognition. For a proper finale, prepare a few simple certificates in advance. There is no need for elaborate graphics – a sheet of sturdy white paper and coloured markers are enough. You can easily create a decorative title such as “Home Bouldering Champion” and add the name of each young climber. It is nice not to focus only on the winner or the birthday child. Do not leave anyone out – at your birthday party, everyone is a champion.

Quick reward tip: Instead of sweets, you can give the children small sports-themed gifts. Climbing carabiners, stickers, keyrings shaped like climbing protection or small bags of chalk work brilliantly – children can try them out and feel like “real climbers”.

Do not forget to take a group photo by the wall. And feel free to send it to us. We will share it with #lezemesblockids on our social media. Become part of our community.

Tips for Groups of Different Ages

If children of different ages are coming to the party, adapt the programme so that older children do not get bored and younger ones do not feel left out.

For the youngest children (3–5 years): Forget the stopwatch and motivate them with a story. The wall can become a “rock above a river of lava”, and their mission is to rescue a teddy bear placed on one of the lower holds. Use large, easy-to-grip holds positioned close together.

For older children (6–10 years): A little healthy competition works very well at this age. You can create traverses without using the feet – moving only with the hands on selected holds – or add strength challenges such as holding one position on the wall for 10 seconds.

A home climbing wall can turn an ordinary afternoon into an unforgettable festival of movement. And the best part? Once the party is over and the guests have gone home, the BLOCKids wall stays right where it is – ready for your own children’s everyday dose of healthy active play.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. How Large Should the Impact Area (Mat) Be Beneath a Home Climbing Wall?

For safe climbing, there should always be a certified impact mat beneath the wall to reliably absorb potential falls. The mat should cover the full width of the wall and extend at least 1 metre into the room in the direction where children may jump or fall. Ordinary household mattresses or duvets unfortunately do not provide adequate fall protection, even if they are the right size, because they are not designed to absorb impact loads.

2. Can Children Who Have Never Climbed Before Join the Games?

Absolutely. One of the advantages of BLOCKids home climbing walls is that you can easily change the positions of the holds. Before the party, install plenty of large, easy-to-grip holds (so-called jugs) in the lower rows. In games such as “Laser Maze” or “Route Setter”, children do not need to climb high at all – they can simply move horizontally (traverse) just above the mat.

3. How Many Children Can One Adult Safely Supervise During the Party?

For a smooth and relaxed party, we recommend a group of no more than 6 to 8 children per adult. The key is to keep the whole group involved. While one young climber completes the mission on the wall, the others can sit on cushions and become the perfect support team – timing the attempt, counting points or cheering. If you have more children, it is better to ask another adult to join you as a second referee.

4. What If the Children at the Party Are Very Different Ages?

This is very common, and the programme is easy to adapt. For older children you can make the “Route Setter” game harder by forbidding holds of a certain colour, or make the “Blind Route” more challenging by not allowing the navigator to use the largest jugs. This helps balance the difficulty so that everyone has a fair chance and no one feels left out.

5. Can the Wall or Climbing Holds Be Damaged During More Energetic Games?

There is no need to worry. Our indoor panels and climbing holds are designed to withstand substantial loads, intensive use and energetic children’s play. They are made from highly durable materials that meet strict safety requirements. The only thing we recommend checking before the games is that all climbing holds are firmly tightened with an Allen key so that they cannot rotate under the children’s hands.

Planning a kids’ birthday party but the weather is not cooperating?
