Our variable sets will turn your garden into an attractive playground. In terms of design, they fit just as well with a modern terrace as with a blooming flower bed.

Before you start installing the climbing panels you have just unpacked, however, think through a few technical and practical details with us. Proper preparation will ensure that the wall survives many summer (and winter) seasons without damage. You can then drink your coffee in the gazebo in peace, knowing that your children are safe.

Where to place the climbing panels – shade, wind, neighbours

Finding the right place for the wall is the same as planning where to put a pool or where to unfold your sun loungers. It needs to be considered from several points of view. It is not only about where there happens to be a free square metre, but about overall comfort when climbing.

Sun and shade: Nobody wants to climb on overheated climbing holds in July. To prevent them from burning your fingers, place the wall on the north or east side, or in the natural shade of trees or a pergola.

Wind and shelter: Summer storms often also bring strong gusts of wind. If you plan to place the panels on a free-standing structure, think about where the wind most often comes from. A sheltered place by the house or a solid fence is always a better choice for the structure.

Good neighbour relations: The joy of overcoming a difficult move can be loud – and that is a good thing! It is therefore ideal to find a place where children’s laughter will not disturb others too much. A wall right next to the fence of neighbours who are just enjoying an afternoon siesta may cause unnecessary friction. And you definitely do not want that.

Anchoring: possible risks and their solutions

To make sure the wall safely withstands even an attack by a group of wild friends, it has to hold firmly like a rock.

For outdoor installation, you have three options:

Anchoring directly to the wall of a house or garage
The most stable and simplest option. You simply attach the BLOCKids panels to the external wall according to the instructions.
⚠️ Be careful with insulation: For a house insulated with polystyrene, standard wall plugs are not sufficient for anchoring. Use special spacer anchors that pass through the insulation all the way into the load-bearing masonry without creating a thermal bridge. The façade remains untouched and the bouldering wall will not move at all. If you do not know how to do this, contact our team and we will find a solution together.

Anchoring to a fence (low wall)
An attractive and elegant solution, but one that hides its risks. Pay attention to structural stability. Attach the wall only to massive concrete or masonry fences. Standard wire mesh, wooden slats or thin posts may not withstand the dynamic load during children’s training or games.

Free-standing wooden or metal structure
Do you not have a free wall or a suitable fence? No problem! A structure with deeply concreted footings (ideally to a frost-free depth of approx. 80 cm) is a great solution. Thanks to hot-dip galvanizing, it resists weather conditions and will serve you for many years.

Impact surface: ensure a safe landing

Because BLOCKids outdoor walls are designed as bouldering walls (climbing at a safe height without a rope), you need to solve what the children will fall onto. The lawn itself may be sufficient at lower heights, but over time the area of impact will be worn down and compacted into hard soil. If children climb regularly, consider an impact surface that will provide them with greater comfort and safety.

So what should you choose under the wall so that it matches your garden and at the same time protects children’s knees?

Type of impact surface

Advantages

Disadvantages

Outdoor bouldering mat

It is maximally safe, easy to maintain, and after climbing you can move it under a tree and relax on it.

Higher initial investment. Although our panels and holds contain a UV-stable component, if you give them shade, they will keep their colour much longer.

Water belongs in the pool, not under the wall: The biggest risk for plywood is standing water. Place the panels so that the lower edge of the panels is not in direct contact with wet soil or grass. A gap of 10–15 cm above the ground ensures excellent ventilation and protects the lower, lacquered plywood edges.

Fastener material: For individual modifications, use only stainless steel fasteners. Ordinary screws will start to rust after the first storm and will create unsightly stains on the wall.

Seasonal inspection (checklist)

Although our panels can handle winter outdoors without any problems, if you cover the climbing wall in autumn with a suitable tarp, you will save yourself work in spring when cleaning off decaying leaves.

To make sure your garden wall is always safe, check it every spring before the main season begins.

Checking the holds: Take an Allen key and tighten the holds that have loosened over the winter. Replace cracked or otherwise damaged holds immediately. It is also a good opportunity for a change. Buy additional shapes and build fresh routes – the children will undoubtedly appreciate new challenges!

Strength of the anchoring: Lean against the structure and check whether it is firmly held in the anchors and whether anything is wobbling.

Condition of the panel edges: If you see mechanical damage to the protective layer on the plywood edge, coat it with exterior varnish so that further moisture does not penetrate the wood. Before varnishing, make sure the damaged part is thoroughly dry.

Maintenance of the impact surface: Sweep blown-in leaves from the surface. If you have pea gravel or wood chips, fluff them up and add missing material. Wash a rubber impact surface with a strong stream of water.

Cleanliness of the surface: The fine non-slip texture of the panels is easy to maintain. If pollen or mud sticks to it, simply rinse the panels with a garden hose.

A BLOCKids outdoor climbing wall is an investment in healthy movement and endless fun. Just a few correct steps during preparation and your garden will become the most popular place in the entire neighbourhood!

FAQ

1. From what age is an outdoor climbing wall suitable for children? We designed BLOCKids walls so that they entertain children from approximately 3 years of age. For the youngest children, it is enough to mount the holds close together and low above the ground. The advantage of our system is its variability – as children grow and gain confidence, you can simply move the holds higher, increase the spacing, or buy more advanced shapes. The wall thus grows together with them and will not become boring even later on.

2. Do I have to dismantle the wall in winter and store it in the garage? You do not have to. The climbing panels are fully prepared for year-round outdoor use. Birch plywood with sealed edges can handle rain and frost. What we do recommend storing away for winter are outdoor bouldering mats (mattresses), if you use them as an impact surface. You can also cover the wall itself with a tarp – this will protect it from deposits of dust, soot and decaying leaves, so you will have less cleaning work in spring.

3. Is a building permit needed to build a garden wall? For ordinary home bouldering walls that are considered play elements, you do not need a building permit or building notification. However, if you are building a free-standing structure close to the property boundary, the general rule of good neighbourly relations applies 😉. It is always better to discuss your plans with neighbours in advance; this will help prevent possible disagreements about noise, views or shade.

4. What if children slide on the panel? Will they scrape their skin? This was one of our main priorities during development. On the market, you commonly find walls with a rough “sand” coating, which does not slip, but works a bit like a grater. BLOCKids outdoor panels have a special surface with a very fine micro-texture. It provides perfect friction for climbing shoes or trainers, and yet is maximally gentle on children’s skin.

5. Can I manage the installation myself, or do I need professionals? If you choose anchoring to a flat wall (brick, concrete) and are at least somewhat handy, you can manage the installation with our detailed instructions yourself in one afternoon. You will receive everything you need in the package. However, if you are not sure about structural stability (for example with more complicated insulation of the house with façade polystyrene) or you are planning a complex free-standing structure in the garden, we recommend inviting a professional. Children’s safety always comes first.

Do you have questions about installing a wall in the garden that you did not find above?
